Factual account

On November 22, 2009, the Detroit Lions hosted the Cleveland Browns. Trailing 37–31 with no time remaining on the game clock, Detroit ran a final desperation pass into the end zone. The pass fell incomplete but drew a defensive pass interference penalty against Cleveland in the end zone, placing the ball at the Cleveland 1-yard line for an untimed down. On the play, rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford was hit hard and suffered a shoulder injury, requiring medical attention on the sideline while backup Daunte Culpepper prepared to enter. Before Detroit could snap the ball on the untimed down, Cleveland called a timeout at 0:00 to organize its defense. The stoppage allowed Stafford to return to the field. On the ensuing untimed down, Stafford threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brandon Pettigrew, and Jason Hanson kicked the extra point to secure a 38–37 Detroit victory.

Archive assessment

Cleveland’s timeout gave Detroit’s injured quarterback enough time to return and win the game. The interruption helped Detroit, the team Cleveland was trying to stop. The aftercurse could work in Detroit’s favor, too.

Neutral explanation

Every administrative action in the sequence conformed strictly to NFL rules. The defensive pass interference penalty correctly extended the game for an untimed down. Cleveland possessed a legal timeout and chose to use it to organize its goal-line defense. Stafford was eligible to return once the timeout was granted. The resulting victory was entirely legal, remarkable for its interlocking dependencies rather than rule violations.

Verification note

The official NFL gamebook documents the penalty, Cleveland timeouts at 0:00, untimed touchdown, and 38–37 final score. Contemporaneous reporting corroborates Stafford’s shoulder injury and return. The accepted evidence grade is A.
